Fibroids are growths in or around the uterus that are usually benign. Some cause no symptoms and may only need observation. Others can be associated with heavy or prolonged bleeding, pelvic pressure, pain, frequent urination or difficulty becoming pregnant. Heavy bleeding can lead to iron deficiency or anemia. These symptoms can have other causes too, so a clinical assessment matters before deciding they are due to fibroids. If you are soaking through pads rapidly, feel faint, have severe or worsening pelvic pain, or have bleeding with a possible pregnancy, seek prompt urgent or emergency care rather than waiting for a routine visit.
Your clinician will review bleeding patterns, symptoms, prior imaging, medicines and pregnancy goals. An exam may be recommended. Depending on the findings, we may order a pelvic ultrasound and blood work to assess anemia or iron levels. Bring previous ultrasound reports and any treatment history if available.
The size and location of a fibroid do not tell the whole story. We also consider how much symptoms affect your life, whether you want to preserve fertility and what you have already tried.
Some patients can start with observation or medicines to reduce bleeding and pain. Options may include hormonal treatment and iron replacement when appropriate. A hormonal IUD may help certain patients with heavy bleeding, but the shape of the uterine cavity and other factors affect whether it is suitable. When symptoms are significant, anemia persists, fertility goals are affected or medical treatment is insufficient, a gynecologist or interventional radiologist may discuss procedures such as myomectomy, embolization or hysterectomy. RescueMD does not perform fibroid surgery or embolization in our Allen office. We can help arrange referral and coordinate follow-up with your broader care.
A treatment plan should say what change you are watching for, when to repeat testing and when to reconsider the options.
